Note for:   Peter Aloysius Mulherin,   JUN 1841 - 3 DEC 1905         Index

Burial:
     Date:   4 DEC 1905
Place:   St. Mary's Cemetery, W-B, PA

Individual Note:
Note: Peter and John could possibly be twins, based on gravemarker dates of 1841 birthdate for both.

Peter came over from Ireland to the U.S. some time before he first shows up in the 1870 Census for Carbon County, PA. He was living in Audenreid (between Hazleton and McAdoo) with a Patrick Gallagher family at that time, age 25.
Living next door to Peter is his future bride, Sarah Ruddy (Rhody) with her family.

I found a Peter Mulhurn listed in a mining accident report for 1873 in Tresckow, which is near Hazleton, PA. Here is the listing:
Report of Non-Fatal Accidents in the Southern District of Luzerne and Carbon Counties for the year 1873 (extracted from the Reports of the Inspectors of Mines of the Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania for the Year 1873).
May 30 PETER MULHURN Tresckow mine.
(Wonder if this is our Peter?)

Peter was living in Jeddo, PA, in 1877 when son Thomas was born.

Occupation listed as "Mines" in 1880 Census. At that time, Peter, Sarah, and four children: Mary, Agnes, Thomas and Andrew were living on Spruce Street. (No street address listed at that time). Peter's age listed as 38 in 1880 Census. This would make him born about 1842, not 1847. 1880 Census lists his father and mother both born in Ireland.

Birth record of son Peter A. lists Peter Sr.'s age as 45 in 1886. This would make him born about 1841 as listed on tombstone. This birth year must be right.
Occupation listed as miner in 1886, born Ireland.

1891 is the first year Peter Mulherin shows up at 57 Spruce Street. This may be the year he first rented or purchased this house. Before that time a Peter Mulherin was listed at 117 Wood Street in the City Directory for 1886 through 1890.

Occupation: Coal Miner per 1900 Census.
Peter's date of birth listed as 1847, age 52. (This must be an error.)
1900 Census listed the family home at 87 Spruce Street as owned free and clear. (In 1899, house number was changed from 57 Spruce Street to 87 Spruce Street.)
1900 Census says Peter's father and mother were both born in Ireland.
Year of Immigration unknown per Census.
1900 Census says Peter and Sarah had been married 29 years at that time.
