Note for:   Andrew Ruddy,   20 AUG 1824 - 24 JUN 1882         Index

Burial:
     Date:   AFT 24 JUN 1882
Place:   Wilkes-Barre, PA (probably St. Mary's)

Individual Note:
According to obituary of Ellen Ruddy Youngblood, the family made their home in Audenreid when they came over from Scotland. Audenreid being a small town about 2 miles South of Hazleton, on Rte 309.

They must have immigrated to the US sometime between 1863 when Susan was born in Scotland, and 1865 when Patrick was born in PA.

Iva Hanlon found Andrew Ruddy and family in the 1870 Census for Carbon County, Banks Township. (Notice the spelling of the name in the census).
This is the listing according to Iva:
Rhody, Andrew, 46 (I think), male white, miner, born Ireland
Rhody, May (or Mary), 40 (I think) female, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Sarah, 20, female, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Michael, 17, male, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Andrew, 15, male, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Ellen, 12, female, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Francis, 10, male, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Susan, 7, female, white, born Scotland.
Rhody, Patrick, 5, male, white, born Pennsylvania.
Rhody, May (or Mary), 3, female, white, born Pennsylvania.

And living next store to the "Rhody's" with the family of Patrick Gallagher, his wife Agnes and their daughter Mary is:
Mulherin, Peter, 25, male, white, laborer, born Ireland. ( We believe this to be our great-grandfather Peter Mulherin).

Found Andrew Rhody listed in 1880 Luzerne County census living with wife Mary, and children Frank, Patrick, Mary and William. (Spelling RHODY could have been census taker's interpretation). Living on South Street in Hanover Township, haven't found a South Street, but could have been South Main Street. Andrew's occupation listed as miner, and 60 years old. Unable to read or write.
He listed both parents as born in Ireland.
Probably married in Scotland. Older children born there.

Andrew died in 1882, after having his leg run over by a train.
Here's his obituary:
Wilkes-Barre Record

Fatal Accident
An old man named Andrew Ruddy, who was employed at the Empire mine, boarded a train near Newtown about half-past six on Saturday morning and rode to the shaft. In jumping off he alighted upon a pile of ashes and slipped. One of his legs went under the moving cars and was badly crushed. Ruddy was removed to the hospital. The leg was amputated, but the injured man had received a severe shock and he died late in the afternoon. He was 55 years of age and lived in Newtown. He leaves a wife and a family of grown-up children.
