Following from son Joseph:
Dad left formal schooling in the 6th or 7th grade and went to work rather than study latin which was a required subject in
St. Nicholas school. In later years always was adamant that his children finish high school. They did not learn until 15
years after his death that he had not finished school himself.
From 1933 to 1955 he enjoyed erecting a "Christmas Yard" in the family living room every year. Over the years, it grew to
be known as "Hahn Park", and included a home-made merry-go-round, ferris wheel and assorted moving dolls and
characters in addition to two electric trains.
Virtually all of employment during his lifetime was in working for Walter Robbins, owner of Robbins Door and Sash
Company of Wilkes Barre, Scranton, Williamsport, PA, and Vestal, NY. He was responsible for opening Robbins facilities
in Williamsport in 1941 and Vestal in 1954. In mid-forties went to Aberdeen, SD and opened some sort of facility there for
Robbins. He was an expert in constructing custom-made doors and windows.
In late forties and early fifties, he supervised the construction of at least six six-family apartment houses in Faxon, PA for
Walter Robbins, and commercial buildings in Williamsport, Lock Haven, Frackville, PA and Binghamton, NY. In 1950, the
local carpenters' union decided to strike for pay raises. After consulting with Robbins, he told his employees there would
be no raises - and go ahead with their strike. All of the employees left the union and stayed on the payroll.
In 1955 he moved his family to a new house at 400 Pickwick Drive in Vestal, NY; the first time the family had ever owned
a home. He lived here until his death in 1973. From the time the mortgage on the house was paid in 1963, he refused to
eat margarine - and a dish of butter was kept on the table near his place.
Following from daughter, Mary Lou:
Though his income was limited, dad's children always felt loved and strong support of family.
His hobbies included Lionel trains, coin collecting and carpentry.
In his later years his train set was set up in his cellar workshop at 400 Pickwick Drive in Vestal. There, men dolls
dropped out of the ceiling joists in parachutes. This display replaced the old Hahn Park Christmas yard of earlier years.
Though not mentioned outside the family and mentioned only a few times at family functions, his brother Edward was
handicapped with a mental disorder. Joe would help out by sending money for his use, along with help from his brother
Norbert. Norbert and Joe were close in later years and Norbert arrived in Vestal one day earlier that expected and was
with Joe at the time of Joe's death.
