Note for:   Lewis (Louis) Mehm,   3 OCT 1845 - 3 APR 1905         Index

Individual Note:
Lewis' obituary states he was born in Hunfeden, Germany. Could not find that town listed on map of Germany. Wonder if this was supposed to be Hunfeld, where Christopher Brahl was born?
Lewis' sister Caroline was born in Sargenzell, a small town just a short distance from Hunfeld.
Both these towns are less than 10 miles north of Fulda.

I have copy of Lewis' application for citizenship:
Reads: Luzerne County, SS
Be it remembered, That on this Twentieth day of June A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven Lewis Mihm an alien, being duly sworn before the Prothonotary of the court of common pleas in and for the county aforesaid, according to law declares and says:
That he was born in Prussia on the third day of October A.D. 1845
whence he emigrated, and arrived at the port of New York in the United States, on the 27th day of June A.D. 186(last digit not readable, may be 1860 based on his obit) and that it is bona fide his intention to become a CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the sovereign of whom he is now a subject.
Sworn and subscribed before me this 20 day of June A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven.
(officiating signature I can't read) Prothonotary (Lewis Mihm signature here, spelled MIHM)
